Over 100 homebuyers of Emaar MGF’s Emerald Hills project in Sector 65 protested against the builder in front of its office in the city on Friday over delay in delivery of flats.
According to the buyers, they did not get a reply to their repeated requests to meet senior officials of the company. Hence they were forced to organise the protest.
“This is our fourth protest in the past eight months because construction at the site has stalled and no one from the builder’s side has taken time to address our concerns. Inspite of complaints to various authorities including the deputy commissioner, the victims of this fraud by Emaar MGF still await justice,” said Rama Chawla, a buyer who is also president of Emerald Hills Owners Welfare Association.
“We continue to plead with the authorities in Gurgaon and Chandigarh. We would like to keep our faith in the system and the government. We believe that the powerful builder lobby will not influence them into inaction at a time when thousands of honest tax-paying citizens are suffering. We hope the deputy commissioner will start an investigation against Emaar MGF and help us get justice. All we want is Emaar MGF deliver our apartments by this fiscal year and compensate us for the financial losses,” she added.
Earlier, in response to an RTI query filed by the buyers, it was revealed that the builder’s licence was also cancelled for some time but was reissued recently. When contacted, Emaar officials said they had already notified that they would start work on the project by January.
Another buyer, Sumit Agarwal, said the association represents over 2,000 families, to whom flats were allotted in the Emerald Hills Township project. “The indefinite delay in completion continues to cause significant sufferings to the members, many of whom are paying rent as well as EMI. Several members have invested their life-long savings and pension funds with a dream to get a house. The promoter has taken away our money given to them in good faith. Now there is hardly any work taking place on the project,” he added.
He further alleged that in a breach of faith, Emaar MGF has spent people’s money in a fraudulent manner after false promises resulting in severe hardships to thousands of unsuspecting buyers. In their letter, the association once again sought the authority’s intervention to end their agony and financial losses that they have been put into by Emaar-MGF.
When contacted, a company spokesperson said: “The Emerald Hills project is a large township of nearly 200 acres. The development works are being carried out in phases and the project will be completed and handed over in phases to ensure seamless delivery. The company has already commenced offering possession for a phase of plots.”
The spokesperson said the customers are being routinely updated on the progress. “The company is in regular touch with its customers and we are also uploading construction updates on our website, which are also shared with the customers in a transparent manner. Moreover, customers are also kept abreast proactively through various media of communication on the progress and the challenges.”
